Embark on a thrilling journey in the South of India. From the beautiful colonial towns to the age old remains of ancient indian civilizations, explore the rich heritage of ancient and modern India. Be amazed by the majestic lush green landscape of the western ghats, the infinite tea plantations, the romantic backwaters and its unique local life and relax on pristine beaches.

You will start in Tamil Nadu with the visit of the shore temples of the Pallavi Kings at Mahalabalipuram. Head to Pondicherry and feel the unique charm of this former French colony. Head further south to Thanjavur and Madurai and visit beautiful temples and palace. Reach Kerala through the picturesque western ghats and do a safari in the Tiger reserve of Periyar. Trek the luscious green tea plantations of Munnar and learn about keralan spices in "Jungle book" like surroundings. Relax in the pristine beauty of the backwaters and watch southern daily life in the surrounding canals. Explore Kochi and soak in its rich colonial heritage before heading to the prisitine beach of Varkala.

Day 1 | Chennai - Pondicherry

3h drive (150km)

Your private driver will welcome you to Tamil Nadu and take you to Pondicherry, the former French colony.

En route stop at Mahabalipuram, the ancient Pallava dynasty capital. Discover the gigantic low relief representing the « Descent of the Ganges », and the magnificent temples, spread in the village and along the coast.

Day 2 | Pondicherry

After breakfast meet your private guide in the courtyard of your hotel. Get familiar with tamul culture and tradition and discover together the charming city its colorful houses, different communities and quarters. Explore "Black town", the Tamul part with its animated fish and vegetable market, pay a visit to the Lakshmi temple and be greeted by an elephant at the entrance. Enjoy the shady streets  and the breeze coming from the sea front in the old French Quarter. The French influence is still visible through the architecture the street names and the checkered town plan. You are in another era!

In the evening, enjoy the lively seafront. Overnight at hotel.

Day 3 | Pondicherry - Thanjavur

4h drive (169km)

After breakfast, drive south to Thanjapur. Discover the magnificent UNESCO Heritage temples of the ancient Chola dynasty. Visit the temple of Brihadeshwara, a dravidian architecture masterpiece. It is a sanctuary dedicated to Shiva built in the beginning of the XI century under the reign of the powerful emperor Chola Rajaraja.. Be in awe in front the thousand statues dedicated to Shiva in the temple of Gangaikondacholapuram.

Day 4 | Thanjavur - Trichy - Karaikudi - Madurai

5h drive (230km)

This morning leave for an excursion to Trichy, climb up to the rock fort and visit the temple city of Srirangam. Drive through the Chettinad region which is an open air museum. You will discover at every corner magnificent little palaces. You might step in random religious local ceremonies in the small temples you will visit. The region was home to the wealthy merchant community of Chettiars. Lunch in a Palace hotel and walk in the village. 
Continuation to Madurai, former capital of the Kingdom of Pandya.

Day 5 | Madurai - Vagamon

5h drive (180km)

Madurai is one of the oldest cities in India. A metropolis that traded with ancient Rome and outlasted her destruction. Take a  morning guided walk tour through the ancient city, and chance upon her stories; of fickle kings and towering monuments; of whimsical Gods and extraordinary mortals; some set a millennia ago and some of a more recent vintage!

Leave for Vagamon, Kerala. You will drive through the Western Ghats and through the lush green tea plantations covering the hills. Reach the region of Vagamon

Day 6 | Vagamon

After breakfast, explore the rubber plantation surrounding your homestay. End up your hike with a swin in natural rock pools amidst the jungle. 

 

After lunch discover the village of Vagamon and hike up to the christian abbey of  Kurisumala. Enjoy the vista on the valley and explore their dairy farm. At sunset go to the Ikkal Kalu peak.

Day 7 | Vagamon - Munnar

2-3h drive (83 km)

Drive uphill to one of the most picturesque tea plantations of India. Opulent with unique species of flora and fauna, Munnar’s extensive stretch of tea plantations is surrounded by high mountains and unspoiled valleys. The undulating terrain of Munnar is covered with forests and grasslands while the scented cool air is filled with the aroma of spices

Take a well deserved rest and enjoy the Jungle Book view from the cozy room of your beautiful homestay set afar from the city center.

Day 8 | Munnar

Today your guide will take you on a beautiful trek amidst the tea plantations and the lush greeen mountains of Munnar. Learn more about tea making and meet some local women at work plucking leaves. If you are lucky you could spot elephants walking through the narrow tea bushes...

Before sunset go for a guided walk in an organic spice plantation, sight pepper, cinamon, cocoa and many more.

Day 09 | Fort Kochi

3h drive (132 km)

Buy some spices from the best organic shops before to Fort Kochi. The city was an important spice trading centre on the West Coast of India from the 14th century. Occupied by the Portuguese and later by the Dutch, serene Kochi has been drawing traders and explorers to its shores for over 600 years. Nowhere in India could you find such a mix: giant fishing nets from China, a 400-year old synagogue, ancient mosques, Portuguese houses, and crumbling remains of the British Raj. Take the day to wander and feel age old charm ambiance of the city. Go in the evening for a typical Kathakali dance show.

Day 10 | The Backwaters - Kumarakom

40min drive (30km)

For the early birds, visit the fish market in the morning. After breakfast head to the backwaters. Kumarakom is the perfect place to slow down and experience the backwaters from shore at their most peaceful. Kumarakom is also one of the locations where Kerala tourism is implementing more sustainable measures: many hotels and tour companies are part of an initiative to minimise their environmental impact and make sure that products are procured locally where possible, helping to maximise the economic benefit that goes back to locals. Discover with a local fisherman authentic villages living at the rhythm of the water during a tranquil canoe ride along the small canals.  You are surrounded by water, paddy fields and coconut trees and it is a great way to get a sense of local life here.

Rest and watch the sunset over the vast Vembanad Lake. Overnight at resort.

Day 11 | Varkala

40min drive (30km)

After a beautiful breakfast, head to your final destination, Varkala. Enjoy the pristine beaches along the coast.

Today your driver drops you at the airport of Trivandrum for your domestic/international flight.
